He bears the yoke with his associate, and inclines him to the scale of merit
(Pirke Avot 6.6)
The Alexandria Community sold most of its synagogues to meet the health and care needs of its ageing members, but has kept some rented property, bequeathed to it. Other buildings, such as the Jewish Hospital or the schools, have been let to the authorities on long leases, whilst the commercial buildings have been retained. This generates a regular source of income which is used to pay the numerous employees, the maintenance of the community’s assets, as well as the medical care and accommodation of some in old peoples’ homes.
The Community employs, amongst others, 8 “baouabs” (porters) which could imply the same number of buildings. The liberalisation of commercial rents and “key money” has provided some financial relief.
